I wanted to be credited, but I am told the "return window has closed." Silly me for not checking the type size upon download. This is the first time I've encountered a kindle book that can't be resized to suit my viewing ability/preference. Very disappointing. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2020 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Dan Westmoreland -- I dont care if it was 200 years ago : The problem I have after 27% is that these New England Sport hunters go out with money and all needed and run rings around folks trying to get west to free starving families. It not funny its not fun. These kind of jerks had a ball killing game while folks were dying on in the trail. They mostly made fun of their poverty and emphasized the horrible weather in Nebraska and Kansas. I hunt for sport but despise these elites and this book. I am conservative to the bone and know liberals for what they are and that do that stuff now and back then. And I dont like it. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brenda -- The Oregon Trail in 1851 : This was a grand book. I have read many books on the Oregon Trail. This one rates right up at the top. My family were pioneers who came to Oregon later, leaving Ohio but going to Colorado to mine. When the gold ran out, they started to Oregon in 1870. My ggg grandmother died on the trail and is buried in an unknown grave in Colorado. I loved marching along with these folks as the maps and renditions take the reader mile after mile on their weary way. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2012 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Green Cat -- The frontier that was not so very long ago : A fascinating account because it was a window into life on the frontier written at the moment when white settlers began to arrive in the prairie and Rocky Mountain area. The author foresaw the future of the native population and was something of a visionary in his desire to chronicle their way of life. At the same time, the vocabulary that he used was easy to understand but not the words that we would use today -- today we would call his writing style pretentious. But the rugged life he endured -- most of us couldn't and wouldn't! Some of his descriptions of various peoples would be so politically incorrect today as to be eye-popping, and he seemed to be very open minded and democratic for his day. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from IL Pam -- Starts off very interestingly,as a few nice, but rougher type head west on their horses and mules : It was interesting to see how the men's travels were different than the travels of those with families and traveling with wagons. There is also a nice comparison between the single men and how the Indian families traveled and still further comparison between these men and groups of soldiers traveling fort to fort. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Emer -- A Must for a Frontier History Buff : Since getting a Kindle for Christmas, I can't stop reading this sort of thing! Extremely well-written account of life on the plains and mountains among the Dakotas (named "Sioux" by the French, we learn), mountain men, and an amazing assortment of characters, all described in intricate detail. I've rarely read a book, from any era, which conjures images as vivid as this one does. This account is a "can't put it down" narrative. Learned a lot of interesting annecdotes. For example, Parkman describes a scene of mourning in which the Indians, in their lamentations, sound like they are saying "hallelujah," which apparently, along with other "coincidences," lead the founders of the Mormon theology to conceive the "absurd notion" that the Indians were descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel. This is a fascinating, contemporaneous comment on the then-early Mormon church. Having read other accounts of life on the frontier and of the trappers/mountain men, I was also interested to read of the same locations, incidents and battles, told from different perspectives, but clearly referencing the same events, locations and people. True, verified history, unvarnished as it would be by later historians. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2011 )

There are but four illustrations in the book (but these are Remington sketches). One little annoyance is the crop of typos throughout the book. To give an example "....one furious s^cr^ enfant de gai'ce! a Canadian title of honour, made doubly emphatic by being usually ajiplied together with a cut of the wliip to refractory mules and horses". if you can put up with these, then the book makes for a very interesting read ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2017 )
